The Taboun Maker's Workshop

During your travel through Jordan, you will have the occasion to taste a large diversity of bread types. Each kind of bread is cooked through a specific process and used in a specific way. You will get more details about the different bread processing on that page. Among those type, we find the "taboun", probably the tastiest bread. It is widespread in the rural communities and some families still have their own "taboun" oven at home. This type of ovens is handmade of clay and straw. Very few women in Jordan still now how to build it. With the multiplication of centralized bakeries, this knowhow is a threatened heritage.

A lady living in the little village of Orjan is ready to open her doors to the visitors, in order to show how those "taboun" ovens are traditionally manufactured from the raw material she collects in the surrounding countryside... This work requires patience, as an oven can be built only progressively, depending on the external temperature and the humidity level.

It will be a nice experience to follow her gesture and try by yourself to handle those natural elements and craft them. You can even try to make a miniature replica to take way!

This visit could be part of a homestay in the area, where you will also learn how to prepare the dough and cook the "taboun" bread... and do not think that this may interest only women!! everybody will enjoy this experience...
