The Mosaic Workshop

Mosaic art tremendously expanded in the Middle East during the Antiquity and especially the Byzantine period. The so called "Madaba School" was a widely spread mosaicists current that flourished in the whole region. Indeed, your travel in Jordan will inevitably lead you to some place where you can see impressing mosaic floors. This art is still alive today, as testify several workshops essentially concentrated in and around Madaba. The city hosts an institute that trains new generations of artists to the stone restauration and mosaic production, and perpetuates in that way the historical and cultural tradition.

At your turn, roll up our sleeves and get into the world of the little coloured tesserae! The modern technique has lightly changed as we now use glue. This allows you to take your artwork away... except that concession to modernity, you will find the same gestures and the same ability as requested from the ancient mosaicists. You can easily integrate a mosaic making experience in your Jordan exploration: you will manufacture a piece to take away as a coaster or a small tableau, depending on the time you will spend.

The workshop we propose here is located on the road between Madaba and Mt Nebo. We recommend it as the project is involved in a social responsibility that supports many local families. You can easily integrate this stop within a day of visits between the mosaics of Mt. Nebo, St Lot and Procope Church and Madaba. The workshop also reserves a space to marquetry. It will be for you the only opportunity to see how the wooden or pearl inlaid furniture are handcrafted.
